Lanzhou University School of Medicine has a time-honored history. The Gansu College Medical Department founded in 1932 was the pioneer of medical education at Lanzhou University. It was restructured as “National Northwest Medical School” in 1942, renamed as the “National Northwest Medical College Lanzhou Branch” in 1945, and incorporated into the National Lanzhou University in 1946. In 1954, it was separated from the Lanzhou University and renamed as Lanzhou Medical College, and in 2004 it was incorporated into Lanzhou University again and became a the current Lanzhou University School of Medicine in 2014. With more than 80 years of painstaking development, Lanzhou University School of Medicine have cultivated a multitude of outstanding medicine talents for the country and have made great contribution to the medical and health services of China, depending on Lanzhou University, the comprehensive and national key university that is directly subordinated to the Ministry of Education, and the key university in the national “985 Program” and “211 Program”.
The School of Medicine is composed of seven colleges (School of Basic Medical Sciences, The First Clinical Medical College, Lanzhou University Second Hospital, School of Stomatology, School of Public Health, School of Pharmacy, and School of Nursing), three subordinated affiliated hospitals (The First Hospital, The Second Hospital, Hospital of Stomatology) and two non-subordinated clinical teaching hospitals (Lanzhou University People’s Clinical College and Lanzhou University Clinical Medical College of Lanzhou Military Region). The School of Medicine, as the administrative organization for the overall planning, coordination and management of medical affairs of Lanzhou University, has three divisions at the department level, including General office, Organization and Personnel Department, and Education and Teaching Department.
The School of Medicine has a galaxy of talents. Up to now, it has over 8,000 faculty members in schools and affiliated hospitals, including 976 employees with the title of senior professional post, 1332 employees with the title of medium professional post; 149 professors and 270 associate professors; 84 doctoral supervisors and 309 master’s supervisor; 317 chief physicians, chief pharmacists, chief nurses and chief technicians, and 458 associate chief physicians, associate chief pharmacists, associate chief nurses and associate chief technicians. The School of Medicine now has one academician, one special term professor in the “Changjiang Scholars Program” of Ministry of Education, one winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, one candidate of the National Million Talents Project, one person included in the “Trans-Century Training Program for Talents” of Ministry of Education, five persons included in the “Program for New Century Excellent Talents” of the Ministry of Education, 23 persons with the special allowance of State Council, five experts with outstanding contribution of the Ministry of Health, two distinguished teachers of Gansu Province, 52 Level I and II leading talents of Gansu Province, 15 excellent experts of Gansu Province, 24 Level I and II talents in “333” Technology Talents Project of Gansu Province, 32 Level I and II talents in “555” Innovative Talents Project of Gansu Province, ten Longyuan Innovative Youth Talents, and 51 Medical Leading Talents of Gansu Province.
The School of Medicine boasts its center for post-doctoral studies of the first-level discipline in the clinical medicine, its first-level discipline and 22 majors with the conferment of doctoral degree in the clinical medicine and basic medical science, the first-level discipline and 43 majors with the conferment of master’s degree and 5 conferment types of professional degree in the Basic Medical Science, Chinese and Western Integrative Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Stomatology, Public Health and Pharmacy, and undergraduate programs in Clinical Medicine, Anesthesiology, Medical Imaging, Medical Examination, Nursing, Stomatology, Preventive Medicine, Public Administration and Pharmacy,pediatrics,Clinical pharmacology and bioengineering. Now there are 5,431 undergraduates and 2,587graduates (including 470 doctoral students and 2,117master students) in the school.
The school is constantly enhancing its discipline construction, and the clinical medicine was selected by ESI as one of 12 disciplines with its influence ranking top 1% in the world. So far, the School of Medicine has 9 national key clinical departments (including Gastroenterology Department, Department of Critical Care Medicine, Geriatric Department, Cardiovascular Medicine Department, Orthopedics Department, Neurosurgery Department, Department of General Surgery, Department of Urinary Surgery, and Department of Emergency Medicine), 4 provincial clinical medicine center (Gansu Clinical Medicine Center of Heart Center, Gansu Clinical Medicine Center of Assisted Reproduction, Gansu Clinical Medicine Center of Ophthalmology, Gansu Clinical Medicine Center of Urinary Diseases), 12 provincial key laboratories, 17 provincial medical quality control centers, 23 key disciplines of medical treatment and health care, and over 30 national training bases.
In recent years, the School of Medicine has made great achievements in scientific research. It has won more than 10 national awards and over 100 provincial and ministerial awards, published tens of thousands of papers, and licensed hundreds of patents. In the past three years, it has been awarded the First Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress of Gansu Province, and published SCI papers, and the impact factors and the number of projects funded by NNSF doubled year by year. The School of Medicine has important influence in the northwest and even throughout the country.
All the three affiliated hospitals directly subordinated to the School of Medicine are the Class A hospitals, with 5,624 beds in total, as well as 114 comprehensive dental chairs in the Hospital of Stomatology. The number of patients visited the emergency outpatient in the affiliated hospitals reached 3.67million and 194,000 patients were discharged, and 117,000 operations were performed in 2018.
Standing at a new starting point, the School of Medicine will continue to carry forward the fine traditions, regard the cultivation of medicine talents with superb medical skills, noble medical ethics, an international perspective and a sense of social responsibility as the historical mission that the era entrusts us, and make our new contribution in the improvement of people’s livelihood and the promotion of people’s health.
